Romantic in Sweden
The Comfort of Stockholm – Don’t be surprised when you fall in love with Sweden’s gracious capital. The narrow streets of Gamla Stan, the “Old Town,” are made for sunset strolls. But perhaps the most romantic way to see this city of islands is on a relaxing boat trip, cruising under historic bridges, past stunning cityscapes and the beautiful archipelago beyond. Yes, Stockholm is elegant, as a royal city should be. But it is also a place where you’ll feel comfortable right away. (And that’s what falling in love is all about!)
Western Sweden is for (Food) Lovers – It’s said that the way to the heart is through the stomach. We say the way to the heart is through Western Sweden, a paradise for lovers…especially lovers of good food. Västsvensk Mersmak is a consortium of the region’s restaurants dedicated to preparing the finest cuisine using the freshest ingredients. They’re in stately homes and art nouveau castles, country inns and waterside smokehouses, serving meals from seafood to “slow food” – and providing countless options for romantic dinners à deux.
Drink a Toast to the Kingdom of Crystal – A romantic meal is not complete without fine wine sipped from a crystal goblet. What? No crystal goblets? No problem! Go directly to Sweden’s Kingdom of Crystal. The eastern regions of Småland and Blekinge are home to 14 of the world’s premier glassworks, including Orrefors and Kosta Boda. They’re open for tours and shopping, and some will even give you the chance to blow your own crystal vase. Filling it with a red rose is up to you!
Picnic in the Parks of Gothenburg – Roses touch the romantic’s heart, and you’ll find more than 5,000 of them at the Rosarium in Trägårdsförenigen, Gothenburg’s 19th-century horticultural park. Gothenburg is a “city of parks” – including Gothenburg Botanical Garden, voted Sweden’s most beautiful park in 2003 – where you can soak up sunshine on our never-ending summer days. Take a walk, find a quiet spot to picnic or simply relax and enjoy the greenery.
Find a Fairytale Castle in Skåne – Fulfill your fairytale romance dreams in the southern region of Skåne, where dozens of historic castles and manor houses dot the landscape. Some are just for visiting, like the medieval Malmöhus Slott in Malmö. Others, such as Snogesholms Slott in Sjöbo, Häckeberga Slott in Lund and Kronovalls Slott in Tomelilla, invite you to spend the night, a romantic weekend or even your honeymoon.
Cuddle at the Ice Hotel – Above the Arctic Circle in the town of Jukkasjärvi is the world’s best reason for cuddling – the famous Ice Hotel. Built entirely of ice, it sparkles like an enchanted cave in a fairy tale. Sip an Absolut at the Ice Bar and enjoy a performance at the Ice Globe Theater before retiring for a perfect night’s sleep in the stillness of the northern night. The hotel’s Ice Chapel is one of Sweden’s most popular wedding venues. As if newlyweds needed an excuse for cuddling!
